The Silent Way Method is based on a problem-solving approach to learning (Brown & Lee, 2015). It focuses on encouraging inductive learning by exploration and discovery, problem solving using new materials, and relating physical objects to the target language.
Key Characteristics of the Silent Way Method:
-Learners should possess autonomy, independence, and responsibility in language learning (Brown & Lee, 2015).
-Students need to cooperate with one another in order to problem solve language issues.
-Teacher are to "resist instinct to spell everything out in black and white and to come to the aid of students at the slightest downfall" (Brown & Lee, 2015).
-Teachers, silently, need to take the back seat and let students work together to solve problems and learn.
-Lessons should work off of information students already know, and build from that point.
-Student's actions will tell the teacher their level of understanding and if students need guidance.
-Students can learn from one another.
