Francois Gouin, a French speaker who taught Latin, moved to Hamburg to learn German. He chose not to converse with German speakers, but to try to read and memorize irregular verbs and grammar books in complete isolation (Brown & Lee, 2015). After numerous attempts of testing his new learned knowledge of the German language and continuously failing, he started observing his toddler nephew whose quick language acquisition was of great interest to him.
Key Characteristics of Gouin's Series Method
-Language is thinking and trying to represent reality.
-Teaching directly, without translation, and conceptually, without grammar rules and explanations is key.
-Teach learners a series of "connected sentences that are easy to perceive" (Brown & Lee, 2015).
-Presenting a series of linked sentences such as "I walk to the door. I stop at the door. I stretch out my arm. I take Hold of the handle" (Brown & Lee, 2015).
-Sentences would include a large amount of grammatical properties, vocabulary, and word orders.
