Previously called the 'Classical Method,' the Grammar Translation Method focuses on just that, the memorization of grammatical rules, vocabulary, translation of texts, and written exercises (Brown & Lee, 2015). This method takes a deductive approach which focuses on forming and applying rules (Coelho, 2004).
Key Characteristics of Grammar Translation Method:
-Classes are taught in students first language.
-The ability to speak in the target language is not the goal. Therefore, little attention is given to oral production and fluency (Larsen-Freeman, 2000).
-Vocabulary is learned in isolation alongside grammar rules.
-Translation exercises are used extensively.
-Reading is the main focus (literary excerpts or informational passages about target language or country) (Coelho, 2004).

A look into a classroom using grammar translation...
-Explanations and examples of grammar rules with accompanying readings and writing exercises to apply rule.
-Lists of new vocabulary, with appropriate translations.
-Examples: Changing all verbs to past tense, converting statements into questions.
-Students may develop large vocabulary, understand grammar, possess reading comprehension skills to answer recall questions from reading passage, but are likely to be unable to adapt skills for oral speaking purposes.
